Jug - Åsa Maria Hermansson - Metal smith

With this jug, a turning and soldering exercise during my last months of school at EAOSD School of Arts and Crafts, I wanted to create something that pleases my own eye and also challenge the design ideals of my teachers and create something that expressed my Swedishness among Colombian silversmiths. I chose to use the not very noble brass and scrap wood as materials and gave them a simple finish that will grow old with style. My hope is that this highlights the simplicity of the design, for which I found inspiration among the Bauhaus masters. I truly hope that it pleases your eyes too.

In a time of huge unrest, I wanted to explore if a hard metal object could fill an observer with tenderness and inspire to peace. The utmost and longterm, although perhaps pretentious and unachievable, goal is to learn to craft pieces that can soften the shielded hearts of the power holders in the violent country that I live in. It is something that I will have to continue working on.

Bird – reinventing ancestral techniques

20181128_082454 copy

The second attempt to make pieces rarely made in the technique obra plana, the creation of a piece of art from a metal sheet using only hammer and anvil, resulted in this bird and my teacher shaking his head saying something like “I don’t know what to think of you, I’m half satisfied and half… just stupefied”. I’m still not sure if he meant it as a good thing. Anyways, it was possible to make a bird, and I hope that you like it.

A word from the buyer:

Lily of the Valley – Cake Cutlery

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Handmade cake cutter and knife, inspired by Art Nouveau cutlery and decorated with my favourite flower ‘muguet’, ‘liljekonvalj’ or Lily of the Valley. With its discrete enchanting scent, it’s a reliable sign of spring in the Northern hemisphere, and in France a symbol of the workers’ struggle and the celebration on the 1st of May.

The ancestral technique of creating a basket or bowl from a plain sheet of metal, without any soldering, only by a special order of sawed lines, is well-known in Colombia and called “campechana”.
